Groton is a town in New London County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 40,115 at the 2010 census.
It is located on the Thames River in southeastern Connecticut and is home to General Dynamics Electric Boat, which builds submarines for the United States Navy. Groton was established in 1705 when it separated from New London. The town took its name from the Town of Groton in Suffolk, England.
The area along the Thames had been a part of New London since 1646 when Lieutenant Lion Gardiner established a trading post there on behalf of Plymouth Colony. In 1705, Governor Caleb Heathcote granted land to thirteen families who wished to start a new town away from New London because they were tired of paying taxes to support Fort Trumbull (now in New London). The original settlers chose the name “Groton” after their hometown in England.
The first step taken by settlers was building cabins along the east bank of Mystic River which would eventually become Front Street and Bank Street . On May 12th 1705, officially became known as Groton; however it wasn’t until June 21st that it was incorporated by the colony’s General Court .
In April 1776 during the Revolutionary War , British troops arrived in Groton under command of General William Tryon to raid and burn homes and warehouses belonging to Patriots .
Approximately 40% of Patriot-owned property was destroyed before Tryon’s troops left forNew York City ; this event became known as Tryon’s Raid or Burning of Groton .
During the early 19th century , several manufacturing companies were established including Daniel Lyon’s Hoe Company (later Lyman & Knight), George Dudley Seabury ‘s Cracker Bakery , Nathan Hale Curtis’ Iron Foundry (which made stoves), and Charles Morgan Bartholomew’s Candle Factory . All these businesses contributed greatly to employment opportunities within Groton as well as introducing new products into circulation such as crackers , candles , hoes , iron castings/stove parts, among others things.
On August 23rd 1814 during the War of 1812 between America and Britain , four British warships bombarded Stonington Borough across Long Island Sound ; this event is now referred to as The Battle Of Stonington . One cannon ball fired by HMS Ramillies penetrated an upstairs bedroom at Captain William Latham’s Inn (now known simply as Latham House) on Main Street; this cannon ball is currently displayed inside Latham House for everyone to see.
