A Long Walk to Water is a book about a young Sudanese girl named Salva who is forced to flee her home during the Second Sudanese Civil War. Salva becomes a refugee and spends years walking across Africa in search of safety. Along the way, he meets a girl named Nya who is also fleeing the war.
The two eventually find their way to a refugee camp in Ethiopia, where they live for several years before finally being able to resettle in America.
This book was really eye-opening for me. I had no idea that so many people were displaced by the civil war in Sudan. It’s hard to imagine having to walk for days or weeks at a time, not knowing if you’ll ever make it to safety.
This book really brought home the human cost of war and conflict. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a story that will stay with them long after they’ve finished reading it.
