John Stephens, better known by his stage name John Legend, is an American singer, songwriter and actor. He has won ten Grammy Awards, one Golden Globe Award, and one Academy Award. In 2007, Legend received the Hal David Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Legend was born on December 28th in Springfield, Ohio. His mother gave him the nickname “Legend” after a story she heard on the news about a man who had the same name and had been abducted and killed. As a child he showed an interest in music and began playing the piano at age four.
