Conclusion
On September 17, 1862, at the Battle of Antietam, Union general George B. McClellan finally had the chance to destroy the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia once and for all. But even with a numerical advantage of over 100,000 men, McClellan hesitated to attack. Confederate general Robert E. Lee saw his opportunity and took it, routing the Union army and sending them retreating back across the Potomac River into Maryland.
This blog post tells the story of one of the soldiers who fought in that battle, Private Dom Raso of the 11th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Raso was born in Italy and came to America as a teenager. He enlisted in the Union army in 1861 and quickly rose through the ranks due to his bravery and skill as a soldier.
At Antietam, Raso’s regiment was part of General Ambrose Burnside’s corps which was tasked with attacking Confederate Gen. A.P Hill’s division on what became known as Bloody Lane. The fighting was brutal, but eventually the Union troops broke through and began driving the Confederates back. However, they were soon counterattacked by fresh Confederate troops and were forced to retreat themselves.
Raso was wounded twice during this battle but refused to leave his post until he had helped another wounded soldier to safety. He then collapsed from exhaustion and loss of blood himself and had to be carried off the field by his comrades-in-arms.
